Hannah MacGill - Opening Speaker

Hannah MacGillHannah McGill is a critic and writer whose outlets include The Scotsman, The Observer, Sight and Sound and The Review Show. She was Artistic Director of the Edinburgh International Film Festival from 2006 to 2010. She is also a published writer of short fiction and drama, and lectures in Film Journalism at the University of Glasgow.

In 2008 she was named in Variety Magazine's Women's Impact Report as one of 50 female 'movers and shakers' in worldwide arts and entertainment and in 2009 was awarded the Women in Film and TV UK’s New Talent Award. She has served on juries for the Dubai, Seville, Sarajevo, Adelaide, Morelia and CPH:DOX film festivals, the Scottish BAFTAs and the British Independent Film Awards.

Prof. Martin Barker - Closing Speaker

Prof. Martin BarkerMartin Barker is Professor of Film and Television Studies at Aberystwyth University. He has been researching both comic book and film audiences for more than 20 years.  He is the author of a number of books including the co-authored Knowing Audiences: Judge Dredd, its Friends, Fans and Foes (1998), The Crash Controversy: Censorship Campaigns and Film Reception (2001), and Watching the Lord of the Rings: Tolkien's World Audiences (2007).  He was director of the international Lord of the Rings audience project (2003-4) and of a more recent (2006) project on behalf of the British Board of Film Classification into audience responses to sexual violence on screen.
